Flackwell Heath 0-1 Hanwell Town - FA Cup Delight For The Geordies
Hanwell Town nudged past Flackwell Heath in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup on Friday night.
Breaking Hanwell’s four game streak without a goal, Zak Joseph’s 80th minute close-range finish means the Geordies progress into the next round. But Flackwell – who play their football in the tier below Hanwell – will feel somewhat short-changed to have at least not forced a replay.
Lindell Stewart, in particular, proved to be a constant headache for Hanwell. Full of bustle and bite, Flackwell’s number 9 had an excellent opportunity to pull the home side ahead in the 27th minute and forced a good save from Hanwell’s CJ Fubler.
Fourteen minutes later, Lewis Pegg then nearly capitalised on goalmouth scramble, only to see his effort cleared off the line.
Hanwell did manage to squeeze in a couple of good chances before the break though. A direct Fubler goal kick found Ibby Sankoh who brilliantly poked the ball straight onto the crossbar from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Eddie Cooper then found himself free in the penalty area but couldn’t quite get the ball out of his feet, scooping his shot just wide of the post.
The second half was a muted, slightly disjointed affair. The excellent, Stewart, forced another solid stop from stand-in keeper, Fubler.
But it wasn’t until the 80th minute when substitute, Joseph, coolly converted George Knight’s low cross from the six-yard line.
The Geordies now travel to Frome Town next Saturday (12 September), before returning to west London to play local rivals, Uxbridge, on Tuesday 22 September. Tickets can be found here.
