Marlow 0-2 Hanwell Town

The Geordies started the New Year in fine style as having not won since defeating Poole Town on 23rd November, eight games ago, they defeated bottom of the table Marlow on New Years Day.

The side showed just one change from the previous game with a welcome return to the side of Matt MacKenzie who replaced Taylor Miles who dropped to the bench.

On a cold and wet afternoon and on a slippery but very playable surface kick off was delayed for five minutes due to a problem with the goal nets at one end of the pitch.

This was the only item of interest in the opening twenty minutes with both sides trying to come to terms with the surface and the strong wind.

In the 25th minute, Alfie Pendlebury was put though on goal by a fine ball from Jordan Edwards but was tripped from behind by the Marlow skipper Louis Rogers when what looked to be a clear run to goal. It seemed to be a red card offence but the match referee opted for a yellow card.

However, three minutes later in the 28th minute, the Town were ahead. A great ball by Dan Carr put Jordan through on goal with only the Marlow keeper Aaron Watkins to beat and Jordan made no mistake scoring with aplomb.

Marlow missed a golden opportunity to draw level five minutes later when William Gutierrez Ramirez broke clear on the right with a clear run to goal but Sam Beasant coming off his line blocked the shot. Marlow’s main attacking threat seemed to be their long throw ins but our back line stood firm and we went in at the interval one ahead.

The Geordies made a terrific start to the second half by scoring in the 48th minute. A strong run by Rod Young down the left culminated in him sending a great cross into the goalmouth where Jordan headed home for his second goal of the afternoon.

On the hour mark, Marlow made three substitutions but we were in control and should have gone further ahead. Emmerson Sutton, playing his final game for the club at the end of his loan period by QPR, made another of his strong runs down the right flank before sending the ball into the Marlow goalmouth where Matt volleyed it over the bar.

As the minutes ticked away play became very scrappy and Marlow’s cause was not helped when their Rhys Harper was sent off for a second yellow card with Hanwell making three substitutions in the final minutes of the game.

For the hardy group of Town supporters who had made the short trip to Marlow, the final whistle was a very welcome sound !
