Late goals from Joe Wilson and Ezekiel Coker led Hanwell Town to the fourth round of the London Senior Cup with a 2-0 over Cockfosters on Tuesday.
In a tie lacking major chances for either side, a display of quality from the returning Wilson set the Geordies up for their seventh game without defeat. Coker showed composure from the spot in stoppage time to secure the win.
Manager Chris Moore made eight changes from the side that beat Poole Town 2-1 on Saturday with young goalkeeper Trent Carter-Rogers making his first appearance since the 5-0 over Hendon in October.
It was a tense opening, with Hanwell’s squad players looking to make the most of their chance to impress.
Cockfosters had the first chance of the game in the seventh minute. After some fast play down the right, Ryan Hayes shot at goal from the right of the box. Carter-Rogers was alert and parried the shot away.
Hanwell grew into the first half and had their first chance in the 16th minute. Rod Orlando-Young found Wilson on the edge of the box and the full-back’s threatening volley left Cockfosters goalkeeper Charlie Patmore concerned before drifting past his right post.
Orlando-Young was involved again four minutes later, finding space on the right of the penalty area before curling a shot just wide of the left post.
In the 27th minute Calum Woodcock won the ball in Cockfosters’ half before playing in Orlando-Young down the right. The winger sailed past a couple of visiting defenders before his shot was eventually blocked.
Yiandi Goulandris caused trouble down Hanwell’s right all game and created two opportunities to open the scoring in the opening period. First, after dribbling past multiple defenders the winger had his cross pushed away by Carter-Rogers.
Next, Goulandris played in Antonio Michael after some more smart dribbling. The forward’s shot was brilliantly blocked by Harry Seabrook and the game remained scoreless at half-time.
In the 50th minute, Carter-Rogers was called into action once again. Malik Nosike drove into the box from the right before firing a low shot at the Hanwell goalkeeper. The Geordies stand-in shot stopper proved himself to be a safe pair of hands once again, parrying the shot away.
The second half was fairly uneventful, with lower league Cockfoster having the majority of the ball. However, in the 82nd minute it was Hanwell who took the lead.
A cross from the left by Kameron English wasn’t properly cleared and fell to Wilson at the back post. The full-back calmly took the ball down before curling a shot into the top left corner.
Nearly 10 minutes later, in stoppage time, substitute Coker was brought down in the penalty area. The young striker made no mistake from the spot, firing his penalty into the bottom left corner.
The win sees Hanwell into the fourth round of the London Senior Cup where they will face the winner of AFC Wimbledon vs Tooting and Mitcham. The Geordies have put up a good performance in the cup competitions this season and are also still alive in the FA Trophy and Middlesex Senior Cup.
Hanwell now continue a run of five home games in a row. This weekend they welcome Hungerford to the Powerday Stadium.
