Hanwell Town 1-2 Chertsey Town

Hanwell’s difficult run of form continued as Chertsey came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win at the Powerday Stadium on Boxing Day.

Jordan Edwards had fired the Geordies into a half-time lead after superb control from Alfie Pendlebury. However, scrappy goals from Jack Mazzone shortly after half-time and Dan Rowe 20 minutes later gave the Curfews the points.

Hanwell were looking to recover from Friday night’s 4-1 defeat in Sandhurst to Bracknell Town and the opening exchanges were cagey as players ran off their Christmas dinners.

The Geordies took the lead as Kameron English nipped in to win the ball at the expense of advancing Chertsey keeper Joshua Strizovic. The ball went back to Alfie Pendlebury who controlled the ball and selflessly laid the ball off to Edwards who tucked the ball home.

Emmerson Sutton had a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0 but Strizovic atoned for his earlier error by rushing out to block the on-loan QPR youngster’s shot.

Mat MacKenzie’s shoulder woes came back once again after he made a strong clearance and he was forced off at half-time.

Hanwell were made to pay for that miss as they failed to deal with a ball across the box and Mazzone was on hand to tap home three minutes into the second half with the visitors’ first clear opening.

The goal knocked the stuffing out of the Geordies as they tried to reclaim the lead but it was Chertsey who got that vital second goal as Rowe tapped home from close range.

Hanwell threw the kitchen sink at the Curfews and Pendlebury’s goal was ruled out for offside as their winless run continued. English was forced off with a muscular injury as he battled manfully to help his team.

The Geordies are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Swindon Supermarine.
